Your Quality of Life Community Report is Here!

Happy New Year!

It’s been a while since we were last in touch, but we’re pleased to announce we’ve published aCommunity Feedback Reportas a result of all your great comments and insights about Harlow, Gilston and surrounding areas.

The report outlines that preserving green space, better public transport and the importance of community are key local priorities. Here are are few more highlights from the report:

  • 65% of people surveyed felt a strong sense of belonging to their neighbourhood, beating the national average.
  • More than half of respondents recorded positive comments about their local area.
  • People feel like public spaces and the town centre could be better maintained and noted the need for more investment into local social infrastructure like youth and transport services.
  • People feel, on the whole, that it’s difficult to personally influence local decision making.
  • Most people are dissatisfied with buses and public transport services, with buses being too expensive and infrequent.
  • Respondents are concerned about the negative impact of expected growth, such as pressure on school and health services, as well as traffic and anti-social behaviour.
  • It is clear that local green spaces are highly valued and should be protected, and people appreciate how many there are and how nearby they are.
  • We’ve taken all the findings, including the specific comments you made on the map to the Harlow, Gilston and Garden Town (HGGT) Team and have given them recommendations based on your feedback. These recommendations are in the process of being approved by HGGT.

Please watch this space for any more updates or information. And for more information about HGGT please visit: https://hggt.co.uk/news

YOU CAN ACCESS A DIGITAL COPY OF THE REPORT BY CLICKING HERE: https://tinyurl.com/YQOLCommunity

The purpose of this project and report was to give you the chance to influence how the Garden Town moves forward. It has been a privilege to work on this project to get a real understanding of the issues that matter to the people of Harlow, Gilston and the surrounding areas. We've had some fascinating conversations with residents and so thank you again to everyonewho took the time to speak to us, filled out our survey or left a comment on the digital map.

    All the best,

    PROJECT ENGAGEMENT HAS ENDED!

    Hello there!

Community engagement for the ‘Your Quality of Life’ project officially finished a couple of weeks ago! You can no longer comment on the survey or map but can still see what others have said. And look out for those voucher winning emails!

We’ve started the process of going through your comments and survey responses. In this newsletter we will briefly sum up some of the interesting findings so far.

It was a real honour hearing views about your quality of life. The fantastic spirit of the people from Harlow, Gilston and surrounding areas was clear to see and with such great communities, the future is certainly bright.

We have also said a farewell for now to our local community researchers Ibrahim and Emma-Lea, who you'll have seen out and about and might have spoken to at a local pop-up. They are shining examples of a younger generation determined to make a positive impact in their local area.

    Some numbers:

7,000 people visited the survey website/platform

1,015 contributions were made to the map and survey

    553 individuals responded

49 pop up events and drop-ins were held capturing 429 peoples’ feedback/opinions

    So, what happens next?

We’re analysing all of the comments on the map and the surveys that were completed.

We’ll then be putting together a report for the Harlow and Gilston Garden Town team, as well as, importantly, a community report later in the year and this will go out far and wide as both digital and printed copies.

The reports will include an overview of what people said they like, dislike and need in Harlow, Gilston and surrounding areas - their general thoughts and feelings, as well as key findings from across the themes of community, health, movement, nature, sense of control, and wonder. It will also include a response from the HGGT team and notes how they plan on taking your feedback on board. Watch this space for more updates!

If you would like to hear about the HGGT project generally and sign up for the quarterly newsletter on all things Garden Town, then please visit: https://hggt.co.uk/have-your-say

Thanks again and all the best,

    The Quality of Life Team

    LAST CHANCE TO COMMENT!

Time has flown by and it’s the final week of the Quality of Life Mapping project. Please comment on the map or survey by Friday (14th) if you haven't yet done so - and remember there’s still vouchers up for grabs! It’s been a massive privilege to talk about what matters for you in your community, to hear your stories and your hopes for the future.

Thank you again to all those who have already commented. You have helped empower local voices and highlight how your quality of life is impacted by your local environment. Your comments will help shape positive changes in Harlow and surrounding areas.

Highlights from the last couple of weeks

We visited the Community Builder Project at Harlow Playhouse. Club members took part in a regular quiz but were still happy to tell us their thoughts about what it’s like to live in Harlow (in exchange for us helping them with a couple of tricky quiz questions!). The group were really positive about Harlow and acknowledged it had changed a lot over the years they had lived there - over 50 years for many. It was clear members really valued the sense of community in the town, but they would like to see better shops in the Town Centre and really miss the big Marks & Spencer.

We were also invited to the Hindu Society Navaratri event at Lady Fatima Church. What a fantastic event! Guests took part in the Be Tali Garba (Dance) and Dandiya/Ramjanyu (Stick Dance). MP Robert Halfon and the High Sheriff of Essex, Nick Alston, were also in attendance. Guests shared how much they particularly valued the Town Park as a space to exercise and enjoy with family.

    What will happen next?

Whilst we are wrapping up the engagement period for the project, we’ve started the process of report writing and data analysis. We’re aiming to share this report with you and the wider public towards the end of the year. We’ll be sending out a summary newsletter at the end of the engagement period with some learnings so far and a few highlights.

    Have a wonderful week,

    The Quality of Life Team

    Your Map Comments!

    Your map comments!

We’ve had close to 150 comments on the map, thank you to all those who have pinned a comment. It’s not long until we’ll be collecting all your views and reporting back to the Council, so if you haven’t yet pinned a comment and have a spare moment - please do so!

The map and the comments will really help to show the Council where change is needed and how your quality of life is impacted by your local area. So please continue to spread the word and tell your neighbours, friends, family, colleagues, pet cat, dog… Garry the goldfish (you get the picture…) about the project!

    What have you been saying?

This week we’ll dive into some of your comments…

Colour key: red: negative / amber: neutral / green: positive

    1) Eastwick Rd / Pye Corner - speeding and busy traffic along this road. This makes it difficult for residents to travel safely and sustainably - too dangerous to cycle for example. Traffic from surrounding developments will only make things worse.

    2) Harlow Town Park - It’s clear people hugely value the park.

“This place makes Harlow a good place to live. Without it, the opposite would be true. That's how important this park is!”

    3) Town centre - this area has the highest concentration of comments. People are concerned with it feeling unsafe at night, that there needs to be more for young people to do here and generally it feels run down. One person recommended:

“I would suggest a big green area in the old market place as the market hasn't been open for a good few years”

Once again we really appreciate your comments and the time taken to give us your opinions. It’s so important local voices and communities are the ones shaping future plans for Harlow and surrounding areas.

We hope you have a great rest of the week,

    The Quality of Life Team.

    Introducing… Emma-Lea and Ibrahim!

Last week we calculated we had detailed discussions with over 50 people at our local pop-ups and particular pressing concerns included there being bad pot holes throughout Harlow, that more communal bins are needed, and more police patrols are needed (in town). Please keep your opinions coming and remember any specific thoughts on places and spaces can be recorded on the map.

    This Week…

    HIGHLIGHTS: 08/08 - 22/08

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS: 08/08 -22/08

So far we’ve had 324 contributions to our map and survey, this is a good start and we’ve had some really interesting feedback, so thank you again to all those who have contributed. As school holidays draw to a close, we’re hoping to engage with more young people throughout September, so please do encourage any youngsters you know to complete the survey - they are the future. Over the next few weeks, we’ll also be encouraging businesses to give views on how their local area influences how they operate. And, as ever, we’re wanting all unrepresented voices to get involved, so that the ones influencing decisions are not just those who have the loudest voice or the biggest platform.

AND REMEMBER you can contribute to the survey more than once, and if you haven’t yet pinned a comment on the MAP, please do so!

Here are just a couple example answers of common themes cropping up:

What would improve your experience of the public transport in your local area?

    “More buses, affordable fares”

What is the most important thing to you when you think about the future of your area?

    “Community spirit”

We’ve been out and about again over the last couple of weeks… here’s a brief round-up of what’s been going on:

    St Paul’s Church

We spoke to young families who attended the Bounty Club to better understand what day to day life in Harlow is like for them:

    https://d3hgrlq6yacptf.cloudfront.net/5f43a78a4ee6d/content/pages/documents/bounty-club-2022-flier.pdf

    Eastwick & Gilston Village Hall

We spoke to people who live in the Gilston area, to better understand what they value and need in their local area. This defiant community has many members who have lived in the village for many years. Wanting to influence local planning is a key priority to them.

    School Uniform Exchange

The Harlow community came together to help young families and school children find affordable and quality uniforms - ready for the new school year! We were there to listen to young families and parents give their opinion on what matters most for them and their children.

    https://ms-my.facebook.com/theharveycentre/videos/harlow-comminity-school-uniform-exchange/756516672225367/

    Around the World food festival

We were at the Great Parndon community centre to celebrate the multi-cultural community in Harlow. There were a range of activities taking place ranging from food and information stalls to live entertainment, workshops, and a tombola. Not to mention the resident DJ Permoson providing the good vibes!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS

What’s been going on over the last couple of weeks? Well, quite a lot…

Thanks so much to all those who have engaged with the project in any way so far. All comments made in the survey and on the map are highly valued, so please keep them coming! Here’s a brief round-up of what’s been going on:

    Harlow Museum Community Celebration Fete

We spent a sunny Sunday at Harlow Museum and Walled Gardens launching our ‘Community’ themed questions. We met so many interesting groups and individuals. Just another example of how vibrant Harlow's community is.

    Love Parks Week, Pishiobury Park

We were at Pishiobury Park, Sawbridgeworth, for an East Herts Love Parks event. It was great to see so many young people getting involved with the natural world. We managed to position ourselves between the ice cream van and face painting… proved quite effective…

VCS Community Event, the Water Gardens, Harlow

We were at a voluntary and community sector event last week, in Harlow town centre. It was a great privilege to listen to passionate community members and local residents provide invaluable insights.

A Festival of Care, Harlow Town Park

We were at the Festival of Care last week celebrating care and community in Harlow. Everyone got involved with enjoying family picnics, dancing to music from the bandstand, and browsing the health and wellbeing stalls. This included hearing stories of care, suffering and belonging (performed in a specially created Care House stage) as well as doing some meditation and tai chi: https://www.rhiannonfaith.com/carehouseproject

Next week we’ll be launching our ‘Movement’ theme. The places where we live and spend most of our time really affect our physical and mental health and wellbeing. In turn this impacts our quality of life - as well as the health of the environment. Over the last few weeks we’ve heard many views about the state of transport and local mobility options, so please comment freely on what is an important aspect of life in Harlow, Gilston and surrounding areas.
